During the last decades before 2007, all was right with the world as far as investors were concerned. Thanks to steadily raising equity markets, long-term oriented, static investment strategies were indeed crowned with success. Heavily falling interest rates all over the world provided an additional boost. As a longstanding follower of the financial markets, I however must observe today that volatilities have increased and that correlations and laws of cause and effect that proved reliable for decades have to be scrutinized. More and more, influential observers are warning against a collapse. How long this may be put off, is anyone’s guess. Fact is however, that this threat moves out of investors’ minds over and over again giving even rise to euphoric risk appetite only to suddenly re-emerge. In addition, the bearing of politics on what is going on in financial markets has grown tremendously. Statements of government spokespersons or central bankers – often placed for a manipulative purpose – can provoke sudden changes in price or temporary trend reversals.
